Galway Juniors in Action

Oissine Murphy, John Cormican and Ruth Cormican will all be playing for Ireland this week.  Oissine and John are playing in the Glorney Cup team (for players under 18) and Ruth is top board in the team competing for the Jessica Gilbert Cup (for girls under 18).  These events, played between teams representing England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, will be held in England from 17th to 21st July.  We wish them (and the teams) all the very best. You can follow the action live at http://www.glorneycupchess.org.

Note that three of the eight players playing in the two under-18 teams are from Galway Chess Club, so we have a good claim to have the strongest juniors in the country.

Also, whilst John and Ruth were preparing by playing in the Jim Hussey Rapid (see previous item), Oissine was in action further afield, in the Paris Championship.  In this strong (adult) event, he performed very well, scoring 4½/9 against much higher-rated opponents, with a FIDE performance rating of 2047 (which was over 2100 at one stage).  Those results should certainly give the English, Scottish and Welsh teams something to worry about!
