Winter League ends in tie: Play-off Required

Last year, Gerardo Artola Pola romped away with the Galway Winter League, winning it with a round to spare, but this year it has been much closer (perhaps because Gerardo has left us to find fame and fortune in Dublin), and the lead has changed hands in virtually every round. In the final round, two-times winner Pete Morriss just managed to catch leader Carlos Silva (who won the grading prize for the last two years – but has now set his sights on the main prize) which means that a play-off on 5 May is required to determine the destination of the Winter League trophy. The Grading Prize was won by Denis Ruchko, with a fine 4 points from 7; it surely won’t be many years before Denis does a Carlos. Full final standings are shown to the right.
