Galway Online Summer League

The Galway Online Summer League will run from June until September/October. Participants will play one 30 minute game with 10 second increment about every two weeks.

Entry is free and open to all, with 100% of the entry fee being returned in prizes. To enter, fill your name, lichess username, and email into this form before the end of May (You will need to register a (free) account on lichess.org.) If your name has not appeared in the list of entrants after a few days, shoot us an email to check your entry has not become lost in the ether.

The list of entrants will be seen on the right-hand side of this page, with draws and results below.

It goes without saying that computer/human/intelligent cat/book/etc. assistance is not allowed.

A list of dates for the matches is posted below. The dates will be Thursday evenings at 8pm, but you can arrange* (in good time) to play with your opponent any mutually convenient time within the nine days after that. E.g., if the date of the round is listed as June 3rd, the result should be emailed to us by June 12th, so that we can announce the draw a couple of days in advance of the next round on the 17th. If neither player sends in a result in time (by email to galwaychess[at]gmail[dot]com – not via Whatsapp, nor my personal email, nor shouted in passing across the street) the game will be deemed a loss for both players.

The White player (on the left-hand side of the draw) will send the challenge for a rated 30+10 game to their opponent at 8pm.
If your opponent has not turned up within 15 minutes of the arranged start time, please promptly email galwaychess[at]gmail[dot]com or message Fintan via lichess or in the Whatsapp group. If your opponent has not turned up within 30 minutes of the arranged start time, you may claim the win if you wish.

If you do not turn up for a game, you will be deemed to have withdrawn from the tournament, unless you email in before the Sunday evening the next draw is being done, saying you wish to be kept in for the next round. No excuses for your absence needed – happens to all of us from time to time.

Takebacks are not allowed. You may enable the “confirm move” feature to reduce the risk of misclicks if you wish.

Lichess’ anti-cheating software is pretty sophisticated. If it deems you to have been cheating, you will be removed from the tournament. It is advised not to be playing multiple games at once or have lichess open on several devices at the same time.

Games should be “rated” on the lichess system – not “casual”. If you, for some reason, fancy having a practice or friendly with your opponent, please don’t use the same time control. Play 29+11 or whatever instead; this makes it much easier for us to find the correct game if necessary.

We will be ending the tournament with two semi-final playoffs between the top four players (followed by a final, obviously).
If there are no four clear top players after the 7th round, those who are clearly in the top 4 will go through to the playoffs and be removed from the draw for the 8th round. Hopefully the 8th round will then make it clear who gets the remaining playoff spots. If the 9th round doesn’t, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it…
The reason for this mildly convoluted ending is that we had great fun on a zoom call to watch and discuss the playoff between the finalists in the Winter League, so we’re hoping for more of that sort of thing.

The time-controls for all playoffs will be:
2 games of 20+10, and if those are a tie then
2 games of 15+5, and if those are a tie then
2 games of 5+3, and if those are a tie then
2 more games of 5+3, and if those are a tie then
2 games of 3+2, and if those are a tie then
2 more games of 3+2, and if those are a tie then
1 game of Armageddon (which it hopefully won’t come to…)
