FIDE rated Rapidplay in Galway on Saturday 29 June

We are reviving our old habit of having a one-day early-summer rapid tournament, and trying to make it even better than it used to be when it was held several times in the early 2000s.

One thing we are now able to do is to have the tournament FIDE rated.  As far as we know, this is the first ever FIDE-rated rapid tournament in the west of Ireland, and the first FIDE-rated tournament of any kind in Connaught for at least ten years, and maybe much longer.  (If anybody knows when – if ever – the last one was, please get in touch.)

The tournament will be on Saturday 29 June, starting at 11 a.m.  It will be held in the Club’s usual venue of the Galway Bridge Centre, St Mary’s Road.  For a map showing where that is, click on the “The Club” tab above.

All are welcome to enter: to do so please email an entry, before midday on Friday 28 June, to our email address of galwaychess [at] gmail [dot] com [please reassemble this email address].  Please include your name and ICU ID number (or FIDE ID number if you have one and do not have an ICU ID).  If you do not have an ICU number, then please include your date of birth.  Pay when you arrive, between 10 and 10.45.  The Entry fee for those who enter in advance is €15.

We will accept entries on the Saturday morning (entry fee of €25), but it would be a great help to us to know in advance who is coming.

The Rate of play will be 15 minutes per player per game, plus a 10 second increment per move.  We will provide all sets and clocks.

The Prizes (yes, there will be prizes!) will be €300 for first, €150 for second, €75 for third, and at least one grading prize of €50.  There will also be prizes for the best Female, and age-band prizes, subject to enough entries in these categories.

For fuller details of the rules for the event, including more details of the prizes, click on the Galway Rapidplay 2013 tab above.  If you have any questions, do please contact us at our email address above.

Update: Perhaps I should add that tea and coffee will be available at the venue (and tap water), but not a bar service.  Sandwiches will be available for purchase.  There are places to eat a bit of a walk away, but there are no shops in the immediate vicinity, so please bring with you anything (apart from tea, coffee, etc.) that you regard as essential for your well-being.

I’ve just noticed that the World Rapidplay Championship has started today (Thursday 6 June) and concludes tomorrow. So anybody who wants to get some idea of how to play at this speed should follow the games live at http://wrbc2013.fide.com/live or http://wrbc2013.fide.com/houdini.html. There is also live video on http://chesstv.com/en (and a commentary in Russian).
