Galway’s Denis Ruchko followed up coming first in the Leinster under-12s (see here) by gaining second place in the under-12 section of the Irish Championships, held recently in Dublin. Click to see the full results here. Hearty congratulations to Denis, and doubtless this will be the first of many such performances in Irish competitions.
Zalan Nemeth also obtained a highly creditable 3½ points out of 6 in the under 14 section, which made him tenth equal (equal with two players whose ratings were 839 and 367 points higher than Zalan’s!), so he also clearly has a great future in chess.
Both Denis and Zalan played in the club’s rapidplay tournament over the winter, in which they impressed us all, so these results are no surprise to us. But for them to do that well, without any of the opportunities that the juniors in Dublin have, is a sign of notable ability and dedication.
